Fine Wines from the Yarra Valley
Welcome to the Lirralirra Estate Website:

Our tiny family owned winery at the western end of the Yarra Valley is less than an hour from the centre of Melbourne. Although tiny in size our reputation is anything but, with a 4 1/2 star rating from James Halliday, which puts us in the fore-front of small wineries in Australia.

We produce small quantities (maximum 100 dozen of each of the 4 varieties) of premium crafted wines using hand picked grapes from the vines we first planted in 1981. Our yields of unirrigated Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Cabernets rarely exceed 1.2 tonnes per acre. These small yields from hungry, extremely weathered clayey, siltstone soils have resulted in beautifully concentrated fruit and wines noted for their purity and length of flavour.

Because we sell all the wines we make through the cellar door we rarely sell wholesale, and then only if approached by a restaurant or retail establishment that we frequent. Thus you are unlikely to see our wines except on the tables of our ‘friends’ as we regard all our customers.

The cellar door is open for tasting and sales on weekends and public holidays, and everyday during the Christmas holiday period, from 10am till 6pm. As Jos and I live on the property we welcome visitors at other times ‘by chance’.

A visit to the cellar door or email address is the first step in what we trust will be a mutually rewarding relationship – we look forward to seeing you.

VINTAGE NEWS

The 2007 vintage will not be taking place at Lirralirra.

The drought had already stressed the vines to the point where we only expected a small crop of Pinot and Sauvignon Blanc.

Unfortunately the severe frost that bought temperatures as low as minus 4 degrees on the night of the 26 October 2006 saw the end to even that expectation.

The ongoing drought has meant recovery to a vintage is not possible (we expect many of the vines to defoliate before they have had a chance to ripen the secondary fruit) and thus we will be joining the many Yarra Valley and indeed Southern Australian vineyards whose crops will be much smaller or non existent.
